Impacted Teeth

Teeth that cannot erupt in their normal position at the expected time are called impacted teeth. Various local and systemic conditions cause teeth to remain impacted. Local causes such as jaw narrowness, barriers in front of the tooth that needs to erupt, shifting of adjacent teeth due to early deciduous tooth extraction, bone density, soft tissue pressure, chronic inflammation in the area, surrounding mucosa, and odontogenic cysts and tumors cause teeth to remain impacted.

Endocrine disorders, cleft lip and palate, anemia, rickets, congenital syphilis, tuberculosis, and syndromes such as Down Syndrome and Cleidocranial Dysplasia are systemic causes of teeth remaining impacted.

Many supernumerary teeth also remain impacted. These teeth often do not show obvious symptoms such as pain and, except for semi-impacted ones, are detected during routine clinical and radiological examination.
